How much landscaping should I do to sell my property?
The Intelligencer, June, 2010 by Mary Lou Erk
The answer is whatever is within your budget to do, you should do. The main reason is that this is the first impression a potential buyer gets of the property. If it is not well kept, a buyer may not want to continue to see the inside. A photo of the outside of the home is normally displayed on brochures, in newspapers and magazine advertisements and on multiple internet sites.
Tall shrubs that are too close to, and hide the home should be removed. Replace them with low bushes like azaleas and rhododendrons and add annual flowers and fresh mulch. Front walks should be free of grass and weeds and lawns should be well manicured. Painting or power washing the outside of the home sets off the landscaping to its best advantage. Thoroughly cleaned windows also enhance curb appeal.
If you are not sure what you should do, most landscaping contractors provide free estimates. Realtors also have videos and booklets on how to best present your home to prospective buyers. Model homes in new construction neighborhoods can also provide inspiration.
Preparing your home inside and out is the best investment you can make to assure a timely sale and the highest price.
