How do I get that spacious and light feeling in a small home?
The Intelligencer, Feb. 2010 by Mary Lou Erk
Removing clutter is only one aspect of getting a home ready to sell! Or, if you aren’t selling, how do you live more happily in a small home?
If you are downsizing, some big pieces of furniture just won’t fit. Take a look at the scale of the furniture, and don’t forget depth! We did that once and ended up with a loveseat instead of a sofa because the sofa wouldn’t fit in the front door! Remove furniture that makes the room feel "overstuffed"! A deep china closet in a small room may be overwhelming-try taking the top off! Color palette is very important as well. Bright, deep colors will make a room feel smaller. You want the walls and furniture to recede, not jump out at you! You can use medium tones but still different colors that will blend together. Strategic lighting and flooding the home with light will give the appearance of larger and brighter. Have plenty of storage that is tucked away-in furniture, under the bed, hanging cabinets in garage, closets-maximize your space! Always keep laundry baskets around! I used to put toys, papers, magazines, and stuff in a basket and either take to the car or stuff in the laundry area for a quick showing.
